				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Thursday, November 2, senior Davy Brooks shared their ongoing work to redesign the Harley Micro-Farm as part of an independent study with Lisa Barker, Food and Farm Coordinator. On the heels of being part of the current and former student panel on sustainability for the October Commons Series event, Davy demonstrated their continuing investment in all things pertaining to environmental sustainability and food.</p>
<p>The presentation was shared with Harley faculty, administration, fellow students (Seth O&#8217;Bryan&#8217;s discrete math class), and people from outside of Harley who are involved in small scale farming as well as local food distribution and businesses. Davy began by showing how the Harley Micro-Farm has traditionally been designed (long mounded rows with a few fruit trees), explaining the limitations on growing space that approach presented, as well as the challenge of maintenance. Historically, the growing space of the garden has been around 1750 square feet. Below are photos of what the Harley Micro-Farm used to look like, and then an aerial shot of the garden fully cleared and tilled.</p>

<p>Davy then shared how their thinking evolved from initial designs, considering both aesthetics and productivity/efficiency, to more fully realized designs informed by research and comparative data. With the goal of utilizing more growing space and making the space more aesthetically fun, Davy&#8217;s two final designs increase the growing space to over 3600 square feet, allow for more planting variety (perennials, permaculture, &#8220;patches&#8221; vs. rows, grade-level assigned areas, etc.) and more engagement (labyrinth).  The program used to render the design was Sketch Up, 3D modeling software.</p>

<p>After presenting their designs and the thinking behind the driving decisions, Davy fielded questions from the audience ranging from what will be planted, irrigation, maintenance,  to accessibility and animal/insect considerations. The response from the audience was positive, even when asked to consider ALL of the math-based questions which could be drawn from the garden layout.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The opportunistic students in Food and Farm 101 made good use of the harvestable vegetables from the high tunnel gardens. For those of you who haven&#8217;t visited the covered growing space, it was virtually filled to the roof with all kinds of tomatoes! The enclosed spaces was kept at a perfect temperature over the summer to encourage the most growth out of those generous plants. After harvesting a full bucket of green tomatoes, the class decided to try out a recipe for fried green tomatoes. Each student helped by either bringing in ingredients, helping prepare the batter, managing the frying, or sampling the delicious experiment. Everyone chipped in the clean up right as the bell rang at the end of class. You can look for more inventive recipes as the harvest season draws to a close. Pickles are up next!</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The first few meetings of Robotics allowed the students to get to know each other, as well as to meet their new teacher, Kima Enerson. As the Project Space evolves over Tri I to house Maker Ed courses, Robotics, and a future teaching kitchen, it was important to also get the lay of the land in terms of where materials were located and how to clean up the space. Before fully diving into the assigned challenge for the robotics competition, the students first learned the basics of programming by playing with Dash and Dot and Sphero robots borrowed from the MS Technology Lab. The class has recently grown in numbers and in facility, so watch out for what they will accomplish in the next few months!</p>

<p><strong>Kevin Boyd</strong> and <strong>Jocie Kopfman</strong> are returning teachers in the Commons, but this year they are teaching a new course together: Sustainable Community Engagement. This course offers students the opportunity to design an educational partnership with a locally based community non-profit organization. <p>Our fearless Commons Director, <strong>Seth O&#8217;Bryan</strong>, helps oversee all of the courses in the Commons while teaching a few of his own specific to the sustainable energy and systems in the building.</p>

<p><strong>TRIMESTER I COMMONS COURSES and CLUBS:</strong></p>
<p><strong><em>Design and Innovation Lab</em></strong> &#8212; Upper School elective</p>
<p>Design and Innovation Lab is an entry-level engineering and innovation class that exposes students to the basic elements of the design process (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test) and then supports them through a series of increasingly difficult design challenges. Through this hands-on, shop-based class, students work with core engineering and design concepts and collaborate to solve various problems. Material and the related tools the students will utilize include cardboard, wood, metal, electronics, digital logic and programming, biology and plants, and more. Additionally, students learn the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to operate a baseline set of tools in the shop safely and effectively.</p>
<p><em><strong>Design and Innovation Flex Time</strong> </em>&#8211; Middle School flex time option</p>
<p>Middle School students learn the basics of design in the Workshop, while developing familiarity and skills with hand tools.</p>
<p><strong><em>Food and Farm 101 </em></strong>&#8211; Upper School elective</p>
<p>This course provides students with experiential hands-on learning through working as the management and labor force behind the Harley Micro-Farm and greenhouse. This fall, students have been harvesting produce and experimenting with unique recipes, as well as planning and planting crops for fall/winter green production in the high tunnel. They also have the opportunity to explore design concepts related to small-scale food production and education, as well as to examine the framework of community food systems, beginning to think conceptually and practically about real-world food issues, discrepancies, and solutions.</p>
<p><strong><em>Food and Farm Flex Time</em></strong>&#8211; Middle School flex time option</p>
<p>Middle School students can spend time working with Lisa in the Micro-Farm and getting their hands dirty!</p>
<p><strong><em>Garden Club </em></strong>&#8211; Upper School weekly club</p>
<p>The Garden Club has been working on identifying projects around the Micro-Farm and are starting with supporting the compost program.</p>
<p><strong><em>Hospice </em></strong>&#8211; Upper School year-long elective</p>
<p>Students learn both the medical and emotional side of providing end-of-life care, which includes assigned shifts at local hospice houses and reflection on what they are learning and feeling as they care for others.</p>
<p><em><strong>Independent Studies</strong> </em>&#8211; Upper School electives</p>
<p>Students are offered opportunities to pursue a particular subject in-depth or develop an understanding of a topic not offered in the current curriculum.</p>
<p><em><strong>Intro to Mindfulness</strong> </em>&#8211; Upper School elective</p>
<p>A trimester course designed to introduce students to elements of mindful practice, the research behind it, and exercises/meditation to increase their awareness of their thoughts and ability to be fully present in the moment.</p>
<p><strong><em>Living Building</em> </strong>&#8211; Upper School elective</p>
<p>Students work together to investigate topics and address problems related to the Commons building and sustainability. This trimester, the students are building a gate for the Micro-Farm, studying coding to gather data from the solar chimneys, and designing and interactive lobby space for the ground floor of the Commons.</p>
<p><em><strong>Maker Mornings</strong></em> &#8212; Sixth Grade homeroom activities</p>
<p>The sixth grade homerooms attend Maker Mornings once a week each to build their sense of community, learn to work collaboratively, and to tackle quick engineering challenges in the Project Space.</p>
<p><em><strong>Rights &amp; Responsibilities</strong> </em>&#8211; Ninth Grade mandatory trimester rotation</p>
<p>R &amp; R is a trimester-long freshman seminar that engages students in discussions and activities that explore our individual and collective rights and responsibilities within the various communities to which we belong. Students use issues facing the Harley community, the Rochester community, and the broader national and global communities as discussion points and examples. They explore their thoughts and opinions about these issues in terms of individual and collective success, and social and environmental justice. Students learn basic qualitative research skills in order to explore a social issue that interests them so that they can effectively advocate and work toward solutions they could implement to effect positive social change.</p>
<p><em><strong>Robotics</strong></em>&#8211; Upper School year-long elective</p>
<p>Students are introduced to the basics of coding in this course. They learn how to design and build a robot to complete specific tasks as assigned by the competitive league guidelines. Using design thinking, collaborative problem solving, and creativity, the &#8220;team&#8221; learns how to maximize their strengths to leverage the best outcome as they program their robot and prepare for competition.</p>
<p><em><strong>Sustainable Community Engagement</strong> </em>&#8211; Upper School year-long elective</p>
<p>This course offers students the opportunity to design an educational partnership with a locally based community non-profit organization. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Davy Brooks has worked diligently and creatively over two trimesters to bring  their idea through all of the stages of design to completed reality. Davy began with the big idea of self-sustainable eating &#8212; taking care of growing spaces, growing food, making a table to eat at, and preparing meals. This culminated in wanting to build a table intended for gathering and eating&#8230;ideally food that was grown and prepared together&#8230;to demonstrate how furniture can intentionally create community. For this independent study in sustainable design, Davy worked closely with Seth O&#8217;Bryan and Kyle Graves in the workshop to design, build, and finish a beautiful table made from some of the vintage barn wood remaining from building the Commons.  Through learning more about the art of woodworking, Davy was able to appreciate the balance of form and function that comes with furniture design. The finished table is located between the dining hall and the tennis courts, and all are welcome to sit at it.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Seventh grade science students learned about human anatomy and the skeletal system in the spring. To help the students apply this knowledge, Carli Rivers assigned each student one bone or a set of bones to make out of foam, cardboard, and papier mâché. Carefully, the students worked not only to recreate a scale version of their bone, but also to assemble a full working model of the human skeletal system. The models were wrapped in Gypsona, the same material used to cover casts, to more closely approximate the look and feel of real bone. The larger-than-life model is suspended along the wall of Flag Hall, proudly greeting everyone who walks past.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The laser cutter&#8230;.it&#8217;s not just for cookies anymore. Well, actually it has been used on cookies and wood and plastic and a wide variety of other materials in the past few weeks. In learning what this precision machine can and can not do, Kyle Graves and Derrick Taylor, our mid-year design and innovation additions, have been experimenting and refining the programming and output elements of the laser cutter. The best way to learn something is to have to use it for a project, so the need for Harley crest decorations led to a beautiful outcome.  There&#8217;s something to that saying, &#8220;necessity is the mother of invention&#8221;!</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On the Friday afternoon before February break, Harley was delighted to host a meeting of the Rochester Sustainability Collaborative. This <a href="http://www.rocsustainability.org/">group</a> is a network of regional organizations that collaborate on projects and assist with the development of sustainability programs. Members in attendance represented RIT, U of R, SUNY Geneseo, SWBR Architects, the Nature Conservancy, Constellation Brands, Wegmans, Community Compost, and The Harley School. Meg Malone Sternowski (Harley graduate in 2006) is one of the coordinators for the organization, which is one way Harley became involved with the collaborative.</p>
<p>The first part of the meeting involved a presentation by Brent Arnold (co-owner with Steven Kraft) about <a href="https://www.communitycomposting.org/">Community Composting</a> and their current work. Harley currently works with Community Compost to offer expanded composting services for our dining hall and full school. After Brent&#8217;s presentation, Seth O&#8217;Bryan toured the group through the Commons, explaining how the students and community work to help drive sustainability efforts at Harley. At the end of the tour, Seth asked those present to complete some homework, asking for their input (as captains of industry, and not necessarily N-12 education) on how they would use the resources in the Commons and identifying the <a href="https://cloudinstitute.org/cloud-efs-standards/">content standards of sustainability</a> (as outlined by Jaimie Cloud&#8217;s work) addressed in each space.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sunday, January 29th marked a great moment in the history of Worlds Colliding&#8230;. Hartman Fest. This event was held in the Commons as a fun, casual way for everyone who has ever worked with Chris Hartman to gather together to wish him well as he says goodbye to Harley as a faculty member and pursues his Headwater Food business whole hog. Thanks to Seth O&#8217;Bryan, Jocie Kopfman, Ja&#8217;Daiza Johnson, and Vicki Hartman for organizing the afternoon celebration. Kyle Graves, our Designer in Residence, planned some engineering challenges for variety, and the Harley Dining Hall, Sara Hartman, and Zena Dorsey were gracious enough to bring food and beverages for the occasion.</p>
<p>Looking around the room, it was truly a great opportunity to make connections! Colleagues from Harley, Horizons, local universities, former students, neighbors, current Headwater staff, and community movers and shakers all rubbed elbows and swapped Hartman stories while wishing Chris and his family the best in this next chapter of their lives. We hope everyone who attended walked away inspired to stay connected and do great things in the future! Thanks to all who attended!</p>
