Some word games are just annoying. I’ve searched for word games that are actually fun to play. If your child didn’t enjoy one of these, let me know and I’ll erase it!

http://www.mindjolt.com/word-drop.html – Click letters that are next to each other to start forming your word. Click the final letter twice to submit the word. If you get stuck, click the shuffle button. 15-second ad before each game.

http://www.mindjolt.com/games/word-slider - This is a word search puzzle that lets you slide around the letters within the puzzle. How many words can you assemble? Love it!

http://www.mindjolt.com/word-dimensions.html – A Rubik’s cube has letters on it, and you can form words by clicking adjacent letters, even going onto another side. Made words end up on a list to the right of the cube. 3-D Fun!

http://www.mindjolt.com/grammar-bee.html – The part of speech your bee is to find is at the top. If it says “Verbs”, use your arrow keys to move your bee to form a rectangle around verbs. A semi-intelligent bug chases you. Music is infectious and it’s fun to avoid the nasty bug!

http://thegamerstop.com/44585-Word-Whomp.html - Whomp the gophers to select the letters for the word you want to spell and then enter it. Whomp out as many words as you can before the timer runs out.

Fry Flash

This webpage tests kids on their sight words (using the Fry List). You (or a good reader in the class) clicks “Yes” or “No” after the reader reads each word. There are 25 words in each set. At the end of 25 words, you can Print the results. Make sure you put Name and Date on the top!

Fry Words 1-25 have a “100″ in the link. Change that to “200″ for the next set, “300″ for the next set, and so on.

Getting Boys To Read

Make books that can be viewed online or get them made into softcover books.
Making books cooperatively (2-3 kids) is a valuable activity. Make sure you have a good speller/typist in each group. I’m supplying an account for you to try it out.

Sight Word Shockwave

We were looking for a computer-based way to determine which sight words we needed to teach which students. This one met our needs. Basic sight words are flashed one at a time, and you (or parent volunteer, or best reader) answers Yes or No depending if the child got it right or not. At the end, you print out how the child did.

Musical Intelligence

We have a large number of students who respond to music. What if you had to summarize the chapter you read in your book as a rap? Wrtie it out so it’s legible, then put it to music. Here is some background music. Use a digital recorder or video cam to record the results.

Wordlist Generator

You always need a wordlist for something. Select PrePrimer, Primer, First, Second or Third Grade, select serif (where the l looks like the number 1) or non-serif (where the l looks like a line) and font size (try large).
