February was a busy month with lots of fun activities. We enjoyed Valentine’s Day and want to thank everyone who contributed to our festivities. After February Break we began a unit on Bread. We all enjoyed eating the products of our many bakers. We learned about Quick Breads and how they use baking powder and baking soda, and about Yeast Breads which use yeast to grow and get puffy. We also learned about how yeast works to make a gas. Throughout February, we had many days of playing just indoors, but we were able to brave the cold several times and get outside. We feel that the outside play is so valuable for young children. There are many sensory experiences for them, not to mention the use of many big muscles just to walk through the snow. And then there is the thrill of the speedy slides.
Focus Week is a Lower School tradition where all of the classes in the Lower School study the same topic. The official Focus Week is the week before Spring Break, but most classes begin their study a couple of weeks earlier. The official Focus Week is filled with special events and assemblies, and ends on Friday with a Culminating Event. The topic for this year is The Desert. We have started our study of this unit. In Nursery Red we will be focusing on desert animals around the world, and mostly on deserts with a hot climate.
