This past Thursday, Connie Moore (5/6 English teacher) and Raj Singaravelu (5/6 History teacher) spent the day in the Briggs Center for Civic Engagement with their 6th Grade students. The classes were combined to discuss Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day was planned with an integrated humanities approach. The students worked on scavenger hunts, participated in “game shows” to demonstrate their knowledge, and discussed the recent ruling in Seattle, WA to rename the second Monday in October as Indigenous People’s Day. You can read more about that vote here (or you can copy the link into your browser http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattlepolitics/2014/10/06/goodbye-columbus-council-votes-to-honor-indigenous-peoples-day/).
