After a few weeks of growing lettuce in the 7th Grade hydroponic prototypes, it was time to evaluate how the different models worked. Mrs. Rivers and Mr. Hartman took the classes out to the greenhouse to harvest a few choice leaves from each team’s crop to sample, then they did the hard work of drawing conclusions (the pros and the cons) from their ongoing observations in terms of plant growth, access to nutrients, mechanical success, etc.
- The teams sharing their observations
- Compiled list of pros and cons
- Asking the tough questions
- Initial rough observations for discussion
- Some lettuce thrived more than others
- Leafy greens!
- Such a variety of styles
- Interesting side by side comparison
- Unfortunately, some experienced pump failure.
- Failure is the best teaching tool!
- Washing the lettuce before eating
- Ready to nibble
- Oh the expressions!
- Might be a little more bitter than typical lettuce
- Nom nom nom
- “I don’t usually like lettuce, but I like this”
- Farmers invested in their science
- Back for round two
- Mid-afternoon snack…
- Working in teams to draw conclusions
- Great discussions ensued
- How did we learn before big post-it notes??
- Good analytical thinking–the need to be objective
- Consider all of the variables….
- Reflection is key to learning
After the three classes shared their evaluations, the next step was to select the models which would be built full size vertically in the green house. Stay tuned for that process coming up soon!
