The Third Graders have been very busy with our Biography Unit. We started this unit learning about Ruby Bridges and the Civil Rights Movement. We read the biography and the autobiography first. Then we wrote a summary, wrote character traits, and made connections to our own life. We also illustrated our summary to create a movie for this unit. Here are all three groups’ movie. Ask your child what group he or she is in and be sure to click on the video.

This past week, we began learning about electrical current. We decided to experiment with what items can pass a current through it. We tested items like a popsicle stick and a paper clip. We also tested tricky items like a pencil and twist ties. In the end, the children got a chance to even go around the classroom to test items they could find. Electricity sure is exciting!

Will’s dad came in on Friday to teach the kids about some of the court cases and government decisions that lead to Ruby Bridges being allowed to integrate the Frantz school. The kids learned about the Supreme Court and how the Brown VS Board of Education changed our country for the better. It was a fascinating afternoon! Thanks Ed!

The third grade has started a new unit on electricity! Our first task was, using the same materials, get a light bulb to light. The kids were not instructed, but instead asked to try, explore, and see if they could get the bulb to light on their own. Many attempts were made, and soon the kids started to notice how important it was to have a connection made from the battery to the bulb. It needed to be a closed circuit to work. There were squeals of joy when the bulb lit!
After our bulbs were lit, and we understood what a circuit looks like, we began talking about voltage. Voltage is the electric force that causes the free electrons to move from one atom to another. Just like water needs pressure to force it through a hose, electrical current needs some force to make it flow. The kids knew that the power came from the battery. They had to predict which battery would have the most voltage (AAA, AA, C, Or D) we were able to use a multimeter to measure the volts. The children noticed no matter eh size, they all had about the same voltage! Each battery had 1.5 volts! We also had the chance to talk about 9volts!

Third graders put their design thinking and knowledge of simple machines to the test! Today they had to design and create their own moving vehicle. There was planning, designing, testing, redesign, and testing again. Some ideas were successful, and some were not. But they were able to learn from their mistakes and be successful. It was a fun morning and a great opportunity for a STEM project right before break!

Today we had yet another meeting for Harlic garlic
We counted how much garlic we still have left. We also brainstormed ways to sell our left overs, and we counted the money! We have sold $930.00 dollars worth of garlic so far! That is incredible!
Third grade decided to sell garlic before pageant! We also are in the beginning stages of what to do with all of that money!
Here are some pictures from our meeting!

“Let’s get cloving!” “I can Harlic wait!” Lots of excitement and smiles filled the Halls of 3rd grade this morning! The children ran their Harlic Garlic company! Each had a job to do and was very serious about it! We had cashiers, greeters, food samplers, stockers, baggers, and kids running t- shirt sales. This was a great time for them to practice their garlic math and marketing strategies.
