3rd graders and Money

Since we are almost done with our garlic company, we thought it would be fun to peek inside the mind of a 3rd grader to find out what they would do if they had 10,000 dollars.  Now it did require a bit of prep because some of them talked about buying a house or buying a Lamborghini, but once they really thought about it… it was funny to see what they came up with!  (these are in no particular order).

If I had $10,000 I would buy:

pair of shoes

a hot tub

a 3-d t.v.

a smart board

Harlic Garlic

A lot of candy

all of the shopkins

an elephant

present for a teacher (our favorite, of course!)

a parrot

a trip

a lifetime supply of candy

spy cameras

a baby tiger

more cats

a tv for the bathroom    (not a bad idea…)

pie

smelly stickers

a puppy

a Nerf gun for the puppy

There you have it – the mind of a third grader :)  These made us laugh!

There is nothing like wrapping yourself up in a good book.

Was school like this for you? Kids here are free to find their own comfy spot for reading. They settle in quickly and get lost in a good book!

More packaging

We have had more reading groups working together to look at different packaging. They had to say what they liked about it, what was bad for the environment, and also what they would do to improve the packaging for the environment. One product was made out of 100 percent recycled card board and corn starch. The kids were very impressed such products existed.

Alicia’s dad came in to help us make buttons for our Harlic company. The kids LOVE them!

Taking a closer look at packaging

After our book The Stinking Story of Garbage, we decided to take a closer look at landfills and learn just how long it takes items to decompose. Group 2 was first to learn this, and group 1 and 3 will start tomorrow.

We learned that glass, styrofoam, and tinfoil do not ever decompose! That is a HUGE problem because we know there are a LOT in landfills. We also learned that diapers take 550 years to break down, while cardboard only takes about 2 months.

Many of these items can be easily recycled.

Group 2 was able to take a look at some packaging. We know that packaging often ends up in the trash. They looked at what they liked about the packaging, what is bad for the environment about it, and what they would do to improve the packaging to make it better for the environment.

Here is group 2 in action.

What reading looks like

Third graders are busy finishing up The Stinking Story of Garbage. Some children are reading with whisper phones. These help increase comprehension because they can hear their voice reading. Max is working on writing a Skinny question. It’s a question that is answered with one or two words and right there in the book. Malia is making a poster that she will hang up in the school to teach everyone about garbage and recycling. Sammy is looking up definitions of words on the computer to share with his group and one group is meeting on the last chapter. We have enjoyed this unit!

Lit Circles

Here is a great example of what a Lit Circle looks like in 3rd grade.

Jia is the group leader and the other girls get to share their answers and job.  For each chapter, they rotate who is the group leader and the jobs.  Great job girls!  We hope to get some more groups up to show you soon.

Poems in two voices at assembly

Last Wednesday some of the children shared their own poems in two voices.
