THE GARDEN SEARCH

Third Grade went in the Harley garden to study it.  We were talking about which plant was healthyier.

The mystery plant won! We called the Mystery plant a squash! A couple days later, we figured out

what the mystery plant was……it was a gourd! IT WAS A GREAT DAY

Bee Poems in Reading

Third Graders have been practicing choral reading through poetry.  We learned about honeybees, compared and contrasted the queen bee and the worker bee, and wrote a paragraph about which we would rather be.  Here are all three groups performing the poem!  They have been working on tone, inflection, and body language.

Exploring group work! Kick-off to the 2015 school year!

To kick off our unit on communities, our 3rd graders spent some time learning how to work in a group.  The children spent some time working in small groups to build a tower as tall as they could using only spaghetti and marshmallows.  Lots of great collaborating happened along with success and failure.  Once they were finished, they wrote one or two words on a post-its describing with a word or two what their group needed in order to do their task.  Words like team work, being kind, listening, and turn taking were shared.  We will use these great descriptive words as we talk about being a good citizen in our own communities.

Letter from Mr. Wender

Dear Parents,

Hello! My name is Daniel Wender. My friends and family call me Danny, and your children will know me as Mr. Wender.  I am excited to be working with Mrs. Tolhurst this Fall in Third Grade. I am in the process of completing my bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education at SUNY Geneseo. To do this I will be completing the first half of student teaching by working in Mrs. Tolhurst’s room for six weeks.  Student teaching is my last step before I graduate, and I have been looking forward to this for awhile! I am a firm believer in the idea that the best way to learn is through hands on experience. Over the course of the next six weeks I hope to teach your child valuable information and skills while also learning from them how to become a better teacher.

When I am not in classes or in the classroom, I am commonly found playing all sorts of games. These range from video games to card games, board games, tabletop games, and everything in between.  In general I love games, especially ones that involve strategy. Chess is one of my all time favorites and I currently have an ongoing game with my girlfriend’s mother.  I am also talented when it comes to technology and electronics and enjoy showing others new programs that could help make their lives easier. In college I worked as a Lab assistant for the CIT help desk and aspire to bring my love for technology into the classroom through its incorporations into my lessons.

In addition to playing games I love to read, write, and jam out on my guitar. My favorite books to read are science fiction and fantasy.  While growing up my favorite series was the Percy Jackson series. I still reread it occasionally and enjoy it every time.

While I love games and computers, there is nothing in life that is more important than family.  I am from Long Island and take every chance I can to go home and visit. Sadly, that is not as often as I would like.  My family is comprised of my mother who is a rabbi, my father who is a lawyer, and two sisters, and older one and a younger one. Like most siblings, these two sometimes drive me crazy, but they are two of my favorite people.  They are a perfect comedic pair and never fail at getting everyone in stitches at the dinner table.

This is an experience I will never forget and each child will be the best educators I will have to date.  While I am nervous, I am also extremely excited and very grateful for this opportunity.

Thank you for your time, and please never hesitate to ask me any questions.

The School Mouse

The  School Mouse is about a family of mice living in a school. The main character is Flora and she gets education unlike most mice. When she was in kindergarten she began to read, and then her education developed into first grade and second grade.  Her mom is Hyacinth and her dad is Robert. In the story, her brothers and sisters were poisoned by a set-out-trap with pills. Her mother had another litter of mice and they decided to  move out of the school and into a big haystack. There, all the mice died except one which was “love-in-a-mist”. Flora had met another mouse named Buck, and according to her, he was her boyfriend . When her parents came back, she decided to teach them all the stuff she had learned. During that time, Love-in-a-mist” ran off coming back with a boyfriend. Then, they all lived happily with the new 6 mice and Buck, Haycorn , Lovey(love-in-a-mist), Flora and her parents.

Reading

They are allowed to sit anywhere in the room to read, but this is where they decide to be – smooshed together.  Harley kids love each other!

Mouse With A Question Mark Tail

After I finished Dear Whiskers, I have been reading Mouse With A Question Mark Tail. He went to the Royal Mews Academy for mice. The bully in the school beet up on him so the cat let him follow him to the barn where they met the horse. The horse’s name is Peg. The mouse wanted to escape from the Mews Academy. Peg let him ride in his ear so he could go somewhere else. Peg was picking up the queen for the Jubilee parade. The mouse with no name got flicked out of Peg’s ear in the middle of the street and got caught in a butterfly net a mouses stepped  out from behind the bushes. The mouse’s name was Ian. Ian used his sword to cut the mouse from the net and led him to the Yeomouse territory. Ian got him dressed up for the parade of the Prince Bruno Havarti. The next night on patrol, while Ian needed to get something from the mouse palace the mouse got snatched up by a bat. He lost his uniform and his sword. He squirmed out of the bat’s talons and landed in a bowl of punch being delivered to the queen. He caught a ride on a servants apron strings. When they were in the queen’s room, she started to talk to him. The queen said to go to the attic. So he did. The bats in the attic dressed him in a new uniform. He asked a question to the bat leader. The question was, “What is my name?” The answer that he got was that his name was Ludvig. He said that every prince gets named Ludvig. After the bat leader had said that everyone bowed down. Bat pilots picked him up and dropped him at the mouse queens paws. As soon as he had said that he was her grandson the queen did not believe him. When the queen saw his tail though, she realized that it was in question mark and then she believed him.
